My new work, Song of Kali, is inspired by the 1985 Dan Simmons novel of the same name. This piece for chamber ensemble and solo mezzo-soprano is in the form of a miniature opera, or can perhaps better be described as a film score for a novel.
The piece, like the Dan Simmons story, explores the contrast of the truth of day versus that of night, and confronts Kali, the Goddess of Time and Change. The text includes portions of works abut the Goddess from such poets as Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda.
